Celebrating Vegan Sandwiches
There’s no doubting the popularity of the sandwich; in 2019 over £650 million was spent on sandwiches, rolls and baguettes (statista.com). The reason for this ever-enduring love for the humble sandwich has got to be, at least in part, down to its versatility. You can be the fussiest, pickiest eater, but still find some way of combining bread and filling to make a sandwich you love.
New vegans might think that replicating a great sandwich without using meat and dairy products could be difficult, but the plethora of vegan items on shelves these days means that anything omnivores can do, vegans can do just as well, if not better. Vegan sandwiches have become an art form, now that we’ve arrived at a point in time when vegan-friendly ingredients are the norm.
Sandwiches are deeply personal; it’s down to each individual to decide how they like them, and no two sandwiches are the same. But they do tend to be made up of three main components, and how you choose to combine them is how you create sandwich magic.
Choose your bread
Most standard bread products on the market these days are suitable for vegans; basic loaves, rolls, wraps, shouldn’t contain any animal products that you’ll want to avoid. Keep an eye out for brioche products, which contain egg and milk, unless they are labelled specifically as vegan-friendly. If you’re looking for a healthier option, choose a wholegrain loaf or roll; these are high in fibre and will provide a slow and gradual release of energy.
Decide on your spread
After you’ve picked your bread, the next decision is a key one: which spread do you choose? Non-vegans may worry that our choices are limited, but in 2021, we can choose from butter, mayonnaise, cream cheese, mustard, marmite, peanut butter… the list goes on.
Pick a filling
Here is where things start to get interesting, because the sky is the limit when it comes to sandwich fillings. Here are a few that we love:
- BLT – choose a great vegan bacon, such as THIS isn’t Bacon, and layer it up with plenty of lettuce and tomato. A dollop of mayonnaise to finish the job, and you’ve got a classic
- Barbecue Tofu & Avocado – slice your tofu, marinade in BBQ sauce (homemade or shop-bought), and add it to your sandwich with smashed avocado. A goodness-packed sandwich that tastes amazing.
- Pesto Mayo & Smoked Tofu – make a pesto mayo by combining vegan-friendly pesto and mayonnaise, and marinade sliced tofu in soy sauce, maple syrup and smoked paprika.
Toast your bread for a true pub classic.
- Ham & Cheese toastie – grab a pack of vegan ham (we love Squeaky Bean), some cheese slices (try Violife) and layer them between two slices of sourdough bread. Toast in a griddle pan or sandwich toaster and enjoy the warm, gooey result.
