Gooseberries are a fruit from the group or family of plants known as ribes. This family of fruits include the edible currents such as blackcurrants, redcurrant and white currants. Ribes gives its name to the popular blackcurrant cordial Ribena.

Eaten raw, gooseberries are tart in flavour so are often made into jam, as the sugar used to make the jam tones down the sharpness of the gooseberry.
