Spiced Red Wine Poached Pear

Peel the pears, leaving them whole and the stalk intact.


Place the remaining ingredients in a pan and gently place in the pears. Cover with a lid and bring to a gentle simmer. Poach for 30 minutes or until the pears are tender when pierced with a knife.


Remove the pears and set aside, once cooked, and bring the poaching liquid to a boil. Allow to bubble until reduced by half: you should have a glossy syrup-like sauce.


Serve the pears warm or cold, with a drizzle of the sauce poured over and some nondairy cream or ice cream on the side.
